Advent at Faith

In this time of upheaval, many of us feel anxious and uncertain. Hearts are weary, souls unsettled and people of all perspectives are searching—not just for answers, but for understanding, healing, and hope. Faith Lutheran Church invites you this advent season to explore the “Will to Dream” rooted in prophetic imagination – to see beyond what is and move toward what could be. With the help of Illustrated Ministry’s resources, we will look closely at the stories of Isaiah, Mary and others to confront despair, embody justice, and claim hope. Join us for worship Sundays at 10 AM.

Advent Events at Faith

Adult Advent Book Study: Seeking a little more this advent season? Join Pastor CJ in a reflective prayer practice on Sunday mornings starting Nov. 30th through Jan. 4th from 9 – 9:30 AM. We will be exploring Scott Erickson and Justin McRoberts’s new book In the Low: Honest Prayers for Dark Seasons. We have 10 copies available to share at the church. Come to all five weeks, come to one – or grab a copy of the book and look at it on your own. Talk to Pastor CJ for more information. Friday Night Sustenance: Service, Soup & Prayer: Join us this advent season for Friday Night Sustenance on Dec. 5th, 12th and 19th from 6-8 PM. We’ll begin each evening with a fun service project, making blankets for Arlington Foster Care, followed by a delicious soup dinner provided by Ozfeka Catering. We’ll conclude each evening with prayer and singing. RSVP with this form.

Advent Candle Lighting: Sign up to light the advent wreath one Sunday during advent. The candle lighting will take place at the beginning of worship, so kindly plan to arrive before worship start time. All are welcome to participate as families, individuals, or couples. Sign up with this form.

Gift Cards for Arlington Foster Care & Adoption: As we enter the season of giving, we ask you to stop and think of the nearly 90 children and youth in foster care in Arlington. You can make the holiday season a little happier for some of Arlington’s most vulnerable residents by donating gift cards to be distributed as holiday gifts to the children. The deadline is Friday, Dec. 5th. Gift cards from Target, Walmart, Visa, Old Navy, Marshalls, GAP, TJMaxx, Macy’s, DSW, Sephora, Ulta, H&M, Bath and Body Works, Starbucks, Sephora, Safeway, Giant, and Uber/Lyft are greatly appreciated.

Angel Trees Mission of the Month: We are collecting for our December Angel Tree Mission of the Month. This year’s Angel Tree gift cards and contributions will go to Borromeo Housing and Just Neighbors. You can contribute to these gift cards by donating using the QR code or link below (simply select Mission of the Month on the drop down) or by dropping off gift cards in the collection plates during worship.

Children’s Christmas Program: The Sunday School Christmas Program is Sunday, Dec. 14th during worship. What better way to celebrate than with a church-wide Christmas party after the program in the Fellowship Hall? There will be cookies, warm cider, hot cocoa, and merriment to spare. Bring your favorite Christmas treat to share!

Dress the Sanctuary for Christmas: We will dress the Sanctuary for Christmas on Thursday, Dec. 18th at 7:15 PM. This involves lots of ladder work so teens and older are encouraged to come! More hands make light work!

Blue Christmas-Longest Night Evening Prayer: Join us Sunday, Dec. 21st at 5 PM for Blue Christmas-Longest Night Evening Prayer held at Georgetown Lutheran Church, 1556 Wisconsin Ave, NW DC (this will be a joint event with Faith and Georgetown Lutheran). Pastors Brett Wilson and CJ Valenti will co-lead this service. We will come together for prayer and song, seeking healing and room to share grief, sadness, or loneliness–to acknowledge the growing darkness around us, and also to remember together the promise of light that shines in the darkness. All are welcome.

Chritsmas Eve Candlight Worship: Celebrate the nativity of our Lord at Faith! There are two service times on Wednesday, Dec. 24th – 4:30 PM and 7:30 PM. The 4:30 PM service will be more family friendly and streamlined while 7:30 PM will be more traditional. Both services will include candle lighting and special music.

Lessons & Carols Worship: We will have one worship service on Sunday, Dec. 28th at 10 AM, which will feature Christmas lessons and carols.
