Serve & Grow

Rooted in God’s grace and nourished by Word and Sacrament, we live out our faith through worship, learning, service, and caring for others. Explore the many ways you can grow, serve, and belong.

Worship

A group of people stand at the front of a church with a cross hanging behind them

We worship because God is the source of life, love, and hope. Worship is our response to God’s presence and grace—a time to gather in community, give thanks, seek wisdom, and be renewed for the work of loving our neighbors and serving the world. Through prayer, music, Scripture, reflection, and fellowship, we open ourselves to God’s transforming power and remember that we are part of a larger story of faith, compassion, and redemption. Whether you have followed Christ for years or are simply exploring questions of faith, you are welcome to join us as we seek God together.

You can help! Please sign up to light candles, read, greet visitors, usher, or assist with communion.

Social Ministry

A bag of apples sits on the grass. A hand is reaching out to place another in the bag.

Faith Lutheran’s Social Ministry Team keeps the Congregation mindful of the call of the Gospel presented in Matthew 25:31-46 to help relieve human suffering.

As such, Faith interfaces with and cooperates in the important work of local, national, and international efforts to meet that call. Faith actively supports organizations including Arlington Food Assistance Network (AFAC), Path Forward, Just Neighbors, Arlington Foster Care and Adoption, Village of Hope Haiti, REACH for Uganda, Lutheran Outdoor Ministries, Bridges to Independence, Pine Ridge Reconciliation Center, Cristo Rey, and more. Support includes sharing of Faith’s financial resources through its Mission of the Month program as well as congregational activities such as purchasing and bagging fresh fruit for AFAC, packing hygiene kits for Bridges to Independence, or assembling clothing kits for new immigrants and refugees.

Faith’s Social Ministry Team also evaluates specific requests for support from organizations and programs and provides support as appropriate through the budget process. Check out our calendar for opportunities to work with Faith and support our community.

Multigenerational Ministry and Fellowship

At Faith, rather than having discreet “youth,” “young adult,” “singles,” and other groups, we aim to host fellowship and community events that welcome and celebrate people across generational, gender, and cultural lines. Check out our calendar for upcoming events. Have an idea that will bring people together? Contact the office to get your event on the calendar.

Monthly Brunch

The fourth Sunday of the month we enjoy a hot breakfast after worship: egg bakes, muffins, fruit, juice all provided by church members and friends. Sign up to bring something or not, you are welcome to join in the feast and fellowship.

XYZ Group

This is a group who enjoys exploring the local food scene with good company. They typically meet on Tuesdays over the lunch hour. Check the announcements for specific days and locations.

Choir

The Faith Lutheran Church Choir is a group of singers who sing in Worship currently once a quarter September through May. They rehearse weekly on Sunday mornings. All are welcome! If you are interested in joining the choir, please contact Justin.

Children’s Choir

Children’s Choir is a group of kids (starting at age 5/6) that learns music to sing in Sunday Worship services. We meet either before Sunday School or after worship to rehearse. Children’s Choir sings in the worship service at least once per quarter.

Block Party

Faith Lutheran Church invites the community annually (and sometimes more often!) to “Jammin’ on Jackson,” a neighborhood block party designed to bring everyone together for a fun, family-friendly experience. The free event features food, live music, and activities for all ages. Guests are welcome to bring their own beer or wine (BYOB); valid ID is required for those who plan to drink. Check our calendar for dates of our next event.

Building Share

Faith is a busy place! Central to our mission of “Rooted and Reaching Out in Love” is connecting with our community and opening our doors to our neighbors. At any time during the day or evening at Faith, you might find a group fitness class, hear a music lesson or smell the aroma of something delicious baking in our kitchen!

Check out our calendar to see what’s going on at Faith, learn more about our building partners, and contact the office for more information.

Christian Education

Baptism

Lush green branches hanging over the water in sunshine

Baptism is the sacrament through which we are first received in the Christian community, marking the beginning of a person’s faith journey. It signifies God’s grace and promise of salvation, forgiveness of sins, and new life in Christ. At Faith Lutheran, baptisms take place on Sunday mornings during worship. Pastor CJ prefers to meet in advance with anyone requesting a baptism so allow for at least two weeks prior to the desired baptism date. Please use this form, filling out one for each person whom you would like us to baptize.

Adult Forum

We routinely host Adult Forums on various topics. Check the schedule for details or contact us for more information!

Midweek Lectionary Bible Study

Adults meet weekly on Wednesdays at 1:30 PM in the undercroft. Contact the office for directions and to get a head start on the week’s reading.

Sunday School

Children sit outside with an adults. Rainbow colored flags surround the area

Sunday School for children is at 9:00 a.m. each Sunday, September through May (with the exception of long/holiday weekends). Students experience God through music, loving teachers, and a Bible-based, age-appropriate curriculum designed just for them! Your child’s safety is important to us; read our Child Protection Policy. Please contact us for more information.

Explore Communion – All Ages

A wooden table is set with a bible and two chalices.

During this class, we explore the meaning and history of communion, what it means to forgive and be forgiven, and what happens when we share this special meal each Sunday. This is an hour and half class and we offer it at least once a year. You can use it as a stepping stone in preparation for a first communion or as further education for someone who is already taking communion. This class is family friendly. Contact the church office for more information.

Confirmation – Sixth to Eighth Grade

In the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), confirmation ministry aims to help a student identify more deeply with the Christian community and participate more fully in its mission. Faith’s confirmation program is for students in the 6th-8th grades with a confirmation ceremony in 9th grade. Classes are typically held once per month on a Sunday afternoon at Faith or one of our partner congregations in Falls Church or Alexandria. There are also periodic weekend retreats, service projects and more!
