25th Sunday After Pentecost

This week the “fun” parables continue as we hear about three different people who take the wealth given to them and do different things. Two of them invest it and the third buries it. How can we take all God has entrusted to us with care and creativity?

Accompanying Scripture:
Judges 4:1-7, Psalm 90:1-8, 12 and Matthew 25:14-30

Stewardship Celebration Sunday

This Sunday we celebrate the many ways stewardship is lived out in our congregation through our time, our finances and our hearts. In our scripture readings, we hear from the prophet Amos that as important as worship is, God’s heart calls for justice and righteousness to be what matters most. Jesus uses a parable to remind us to pay attention and stay awake. As we look onward to 2024, may we remain rooted in the heart of God and continue to reach out toward our neighbors and the world.

Accompanying Scripture:
Amos 5:18-24, Matthew 25:1-13

All Saints’ Sunday

Today we give thanks for the saints who have gone before us, for the saints still among us, and for the saints of God still to come. We give thanks for the examples of faithful living that the saints have given us as they navigated the stormy waters of life, and also for the faithful acts of service we are empowered by God’s Holy Spirit to do in our own seas. We give thanks, too, for the fullness of eternal life in which the saints of God who have gone before us now partake and which we have yet to fully enjoy.

Accompanying Scripture:
Psalm 34:1-10, 22, 1 John 3:1-3, Matthew 5:1-12

Reformation Sunday

Rooted in the past and growing into the future, the church must always be reformed in order to live out the love of Christ in an ever-changing world. As we celebrate Reformation Sunday, we embrace the good news of God’s grace, that Jesus Christ sets us free every day to do this life-transforming work. Trusting in the freedom given to us in baptism, we pray for the church, that Christians will unite more fully in worship and mission.

Accompanying Scripture:
Romans 3:19-28; Psalm 46; Matthew 22:34-40

You Have Heard it Said, “Give it to Cesar”…

This Sunday we begin on a worship series about faith and finances. In our gospel text, Jesus tells us to give Cesar what is Cesar’s and God what is God’s. This is a sneaky proposal considering God created the whole universe, us included. While we have many things vying for our attention and finances in our lives, worship is a chance to reorient ourselves to God’s way of life for us and for our neighbor.

Accompanying Scripture:
Isaiah 45: 1-7; Psalm 96:1-7; Matthew 22:15-22

Did you RSVP?

In this week’s gospel, Jesus tells a parable of a royal wedding, where the king invites guests to his son’s wedding banquet, but they refuse to come. The king then extends the invitation to anyone on the streets, but one guest is found improperly dressed and is thrown out. Today we celebrate God’s wide welcome to all of us to the table and remember that we are called to do the same for others.

Accompanying Scripture:
Isaiah 25:1-9; Psalm 23; Matthew 22:1-14

Blessing of the Animals

On this last Sunday of Creation, we celebrate St. Francis and his love for all creatures – goats, sea monsters, birds, honey bees, badgers, sheep and of course the furry companions we live with.

Accompanying Scripture:
Psalm 104:1a, 18-31; Matthew 25: 31-46

Season of Creation: Forest

This week we celebrate the importance of the forest. Trees are an essential part of the ecosystem. Trees are rooted in an underground network providing stability to the environment around them and connection to neighboring plants and trees. Above ground, they provide us with clean air to breathe, shade on a hot day, a source of fruit and nuts and a home for so many creatures big and small. Faith Lutheran’s mission statement reminds our church community that we too are like a tree – “Rooted and Reaching out in Love.” We celebrate our connection to the natural world, to God our creator and to one another.

Accompanying Scripture:
Isaiah 55:8-13; Psalm 104:1a, 14-17; Luke 21:29-33

Season of Creation: Land

On this second Sunday celebrating creation, we remember the land. Adam in Hebrew means mudman, and so from the beginning of scripture we are reminded we come from the earth. From the land, we are fed. From the land, all life flourishes. In scripture lessons we hear stories about ownership – who owns the land, whose responsible and who benefits.

Accompanying Scripture:
Leviticus 25:1-12, 18-24 ; Matthew 4:1-4
