Imagine entering a concert hall, ready to listen to one of the greatest composers play a piece, only to watch him sit at the piano and do nothing for four and a half minutes.

Pastor Kate follows the lead of composer John Cage and begins her sermon with 4 minutes, 33 seconds of “silence” (the silence is not included in the recording), playing with the idea of our preconceived notions and set definitions. Something Jesus did with the Pharisees 2000 years ago.

Pastor Kate remembers growing up in New Mexico and being pelted with sand as the wind carried it across the landscape. She also remembers praying for rain to water the barren land. A week after a gunman opened fire in a church in a small Texas town, the prophet Amos is difficult to hear and yet needed. Pastor Kate explores what Amos’ words have to say to us in the wake of yet another mass shooting in connection with what God wanted from the Israelites (and now wants from us).

Pastor Kate plays with the notion that, if he were alive today, King David might be skilled at building a persona through social media.  Like David we also desire to present our best possible selves to the world, in spite of God’s disregard for outward appearances.

If there was ever a week that felt worthy of complaint, last week was it. Pastor Kate remembers a time she was stuck in the Mojave Desert and reflects on what the Israelites must have felt wandering around in the wilderness after escaping Pharaoh. All of which connect to our own experience of wandering in the wilderness of tragedy for the past several weeks.

The Good Place

People have been wrestling for years with the question of who goes to heaven and who goes to hell. On the TV show The Good Place, there is no heaven or hell. There is the Good Place and the Bad Place, and their answer to the question is that good people go to the Good Place and bad people go to the Bad Place. But the way that gets lived out on the show makes for an interesting dynamic between good and bad.

 

Sort of like the Jacob and Esau story from Genesis. Pastor Kate dives into how God seems to play with our understanding of what is good and bad and who is rewarded and punished for their behavior.

Loose Ends

No one likes loose ends or an unresolved movie ending. Which might be why the story of Abraham taking his son, Isaac, up a mountain to sacrifice him is so unsatisfying. The story reads like a movie plot, seemingly concluding with a happy ending. But a closer look reveals all sorts of loose ends.
Pastor Kate examines these loose ends and what they mean for us as people of God.

“Surely, not I?”

It’s easy to watch Breaking Bad and assume we’d never become like Walter White; to assume that we are not capable of committing the atrocities he does while cooking and selling methamphetamine.  Pastor Kate tackles this assumption while also examining our slavery to sin – starting with the disciples and then ourselves. Yet, Jesus wants to save us. Which is part of what communion is all about.
