Mission of the Month: Village of Hope
September’s Mission of the Month is the Village of Hope (VoH), a Christian fundraising organization committed to supporting programs and ministries in Haiti that promote excellence in education, spiritual growth and primary health care. To that end, VoH funds a school for 640 students and a health center which provides health care, food, immunizations, health education and midwifery. To learn more about VoH, visit their website.

You can support Village of Hope by praying for their ministry, giving to them through Faith’s mission of the month program, sponsoring a child, or going on a mission trip. Donate to the mission of the month by using the special mission offering envelopes in the pews or online at www.flcva.org.

Blessing of the Animals, Saturday, October 1, 10 a.m.
Gather in the upper parking lot off Jackson Street for a special service of blessing for our animal companions. All pet varieties are welcome on a leash, in a crate, in a bowl, or other habitat/container as appropriate.

First Friday Family Potluck, October 7, 5:30 p.m.
It’s Taco Friday! Join the Families of Faith for a Taco Bar, fellowship, and activities on Friday, October 7 in the Fellowship Hall. Sign up online at http://tinyurl.com/TacoBarFriday to bring something to the potluck and help set or clean up. All ages are welcome!

Sunday School
Sunday School classes are held from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Please note the new time! PreK – grade 3 students should go directly to their classrooms downstairs, and grades 4/5 should report to the Lounge at 9:30. All classes will return to worship at 10:15 to participate in the offering, children’s message, and Communion.

Young Adult Firepit Theology, Friday, September 30, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Come sit around the fire at Pastor Kate’s house (the 1st Street parsonage), roast marshmallows, make s’mores, and talk about God. The conversation will be casual and Pastor Kate will have some questions to get the conversation started and keep it going. Bring your own beverages and a comfy chair to sit in.

Young Adult Oktoberfest, Saturday, October 22, 4:30 – 7:30 p.m.
We’ll gather at Pastor Kate’s house (the parsonage on 1st Street) for brats and a good time. Not only will we fill ourselves with food and drink, but we’ll also take time to wrestle with a semi-spiritual question together. Brats, buns, and condiments will be provided. BYOB and/or a side dish to share.

Upcoming XYZ (Xtra Years of Zest) Events
Tuesday, October 4, 10:30 a.m. departure from the parking lot for a trip to the Shamrock Restaurant and Catoctin Orchard.

Tuesday, October 18, 11:30 a.m., Oktoberfest at Pastor Kate’s (1st Street parsonage). Brats, buns, and condiments will be provided. BYOB and/or a side dish to share.

Stray Kitchen Items Need Good Homes
There is a growing collection of stray water bottles, containers, etc., that people have left in the kitchen. Please stop by and retrieve your items by October 10, after which remainders will be donated.

Faith’s Athletic Department Needs Your Help!
Faith has a large collection of playground balls, volleyballs, and basketballs that are partially or completely deflated. If you own an air pump, please help by taking some home to inflate and then return by next weekend. The balls are in mesh bags located under the green cover in a bin next to the Fellowship Hall stage.

Mission of the Month: Bridges to Independence
Bridges to Independence (“Bridges”), formerly the Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless, is a nonprofit organization providing shelter and support for homeless women and families and those at risk of becoming homeless. Bridges’ goal is to provide people with the skills and resources they need to lift themselves out of poverty and achieve financial stability and self-sufficiency.

Job Vacancies at Faith
The Council has decided to divide the Communications Coordinator & Office Administrator position into two new part-time positions. If you know someone who would be interested in either position, please email Jill Faris, Council President. Brief descriptions are offered below; for the complete job description, click on the job title.

Communications Coordinator – This position develops, manages and oversees key aspects of Faith Lutheran Church’s communications and operations, including but not limited to communications by phone, email, or other electronic means, website, social media, weekly worship bulletins, announcements and other printed material. This position is also responsible for routine office tasks, maintaining membership records, and preparing annual reports.

Church Business Administrator – This position is responsible for the business affairs of Faith Lutheran Church by providing administration and support in the areas of property and facility management, financial management, audio/visual and information technology. This position would work closely with the Treasurer, Financial Secretary, Bookkeeper, Legal Trustees, Stewardship Chair, and service contractors.

Welcome, Pastor Kate!
Rev. Kate Davidson’s first day as Faith’s newest pastor is tomorrow, August 1. We are thrilled to welcome Pastor Kate on board!

Cheer on the Faith Kickball Team!
Faith is fielding a kickball team for the 11th annual Safe At Home Kickball Tournament to benefit Bridges to Independence this coming Saturday, August 6, at Long Branch Park in Crystal City. The tournament “kicks off” (pun totally intended) with an opening ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Bridges to Independence is Faith’s Mission of the Month in August. Come cheer on Faith’s team!

Next Week: Learn More About Bridges to Independence (B2I)
If you haven’t gotten fired up about B2I watching the kickball tournament, come to church on Sunday to learn more about their work. A representative will give a brief presentation during worship and be available to answer questions between services.

Doctora Mendóza-Bruce provides health services and education to vulnerable people in Juarez. She also assists 95 students in all grade levels with school scholarships. Her ministries rely solely on donations and volunteers. More detailed information is available in the summer issue of the Key.

Guest Pastor Today: Rev. Rich Zawistowski
Pastor Rich was born and raised in Baltimore, and served three different parishes in SD. Pastor Rich has spent most of his ministry in Campus Ministry at University of Northern Colorado and Indiana University. He later served as Assistant to the Bishop in Indiana Kentucky Synod, then in Churchwide offices as Associate Director for Campus Ministry. Recently, Pastor Rich has served as an interim associate pastor and as a hospital chaplain. The birth of their twin granddaughters brought Pastor Rich and his wife back to this area, where he is serving as a confirmation pastor at Saint Luke in Silver Spring. Welcome!

Announcements – July 17, 2016

Guest Preacher Today: Rev. Dr. Y’Lon Dozier
Our guest preacher today is Rev. Dr. Y’Lon M. Dozier. Rev. Dr. Y’Lon Dozier grew up in a military family and served in the Navy before earning her MDiv and DMin at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC. She has more than ten years of ecumenical parish ministry experience, having served congregations in PA and NY as a senior pastor and intentional interim pastor. She currently serves as a Chaplain at the Virginia Hospital Center, specifically in the Women & Infant Health Center in Neonatal Intensive Care, Mother & Baby, and Labor & Delivery, and on the Palliative Care team. She also serves a number of congregations as a Church Consultant, Pastoral Spiritual Director/Spiritual Listener, Supply Preacher and Gap Pastor. Rev. Dr. Y’Lon Dozier is widowed with three adult children and two grandchildren, and is also (lucky for us!) a member of Faith.

Faith’s Rejuvenation Process Continues
The Jackson Street entrance renovation is coming along! We request that people not use this entrance for a few weeks, but the noticeable improvements will be worth it! We’ll continue to see transformation in our fellowship space throughout the summer. Painting of the building’s exterior trim will begin in early July as well, now that new gutters have been installed and repairs have been made to the roof. Be sure to check out the progress each Sunday when you come for worship!

Lutheran Men in Mission are gathering men from coast-to-coast for a backpacking adventure, Aug. 14-19, in Hillside, Colorado,  in the mountains at Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp. It will be a Christ-centered adventure that is challenging both physically and spiritually. More at www.lutheranmeninmission.org

Mission of the Month: Arlington Free Clinic
The Arlington Free Clinic (AFC) provides free, high-quality medical care to low-income, uninsured Arlington County adults through the generosity of donors and volunteers. All patients live in Arlington County and have incomes at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. Although most of their patients work, their jobs do not include access to health insurance. In recent years, an increasing number of new patients came to the AFC after losing their jobs and their insurance.

Memorial Service: Shirley Haugrose
Tuesday, June 21, 10:30 a.m.
Please join us in celebrating Shirley’s life among her friends at Faith.

On Tuesday, June 21, we plan to attend the memorial service for Shirley Haugrose at 10:30 a.m. at the church. Afterwards we will have lunch at Uncle Julio’s. Anyone who wishes to meet us there is welcome to join us!

Young Adult Ministry
Saturday, June 25th, 8:15am – Three Waterfalls Hike.
We’ll hike a 9.3-mile trail, which passes three waterfalls in the southern Shenandoah National Park. (There will also be a shorter option of 6.1 miles and two waterfalls. If it’s a hot weekend, we may have a substitute hike.) After the hike, we plan to stop for dinner in the foothills. Please email Greg M. to sign up or for more information.

Remembrance of Pregnancy Loss
Sunday, June 26, 12:30 p.m.
Anyone who has been touched by the pain of pregnancy loss is invited to participate in a Service of Remembrance on Sunday, June 26. The magnolia tree newly planted near the Jackson Street doors was planted to serve as a memorial to loved ones lost through pregnancy loss, and we will dedicated it to that purpose at our Service of Remembrance. If you have questions, please contact Pastor Yvette. Thank you to Faith’s Memorial Fund for covering the cost of the magnolia tree.

Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church (in Haymarket) is planning a mission trip to the Village of Hope in Haiti, September 24 – 30. They still have a few slots open! If you’re interested in joining the group for this trip, please contact Jill Z.

Announcements – June 12, 2016

Welcome, Rev. Dr. Ridgeway Addison
Our guest preacher today is Rev. Dr. Ridgeway Addison. Dr. Addison is an educator and researcher in the fields of spirituality, theology, and ethics. Dr. Addison was the first theologian to serve Georgetown’s School of Nursing and Health Studies as a full-time faculty (2011-2015). Besides his teaching and research, he also provided resources for NHS faculty, staff and students on Georgetown’s Jesuit vision and mission, Ignatian spirituality and, more generally, the import of spirituality and religious identity in contemporary health care. Dr. Addison is an ordained Baptist minister associated with the Cooperative Baptist Association and Alliance of Baptists.

Dr. Addison currently serves on the Board of Directors and adjunct teaching faculty of the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation based in Washington, DC. A classically trained musician (piano, voice, guitar) and composer, he regularly incorporates music and other arts into his teaching, speaking, and scholarship. He is married to Rev. Sarah Scherschligt, pastor of Peace Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Their delightful daughter, Magdalene, is looking forward to becoming a big sister soon!

Synod Assembly
On Saturday, June 18, Jill F., Stephanie B. and Aaron P. will be serving as voting delegates at the Metropolitan Washington DC Synod Assembly in Gaithersburg, MD. The theme for this year’s assembly is “For the Healing of the Nations.” Learn more.

Congregational Meeting to Consider New Co-Pastor for Faith!
A special meeting of the congregation will be held TODAY at 12:15 p.m. to consider the Church Council’s recommendation to call The Rev. Katherine (Kate) A. Davidson to be co-pastor of Faith Lutheran Church. All confirmed members are asked to come to this important meeting of the congregation.

Mission of the Month: Arlington Free Clinic
The Arlington Free Clinic (AFC) provides free, high-quality medical care to low-income, uninsured Arlington County adults through the generosity of donors and volunteers. All patients live in Arlington County and have incomes at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. Although most of their patients work, their jobs do not include access to health insurance. In recent years, an increasing number of new patients came to the AFC after losing their jobs and their insurance.

You can give to the mission of the month by using the special mission offering envelopes in the pews, online at www.flcva.org, or by scanning the QR code on the back of this bulletin.

First Communion Classes Continue On Saturday
Just a reminder to parents: the second half of First Communion instruction will take place this coming Saturday, June 11, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. The children will be baking the bread used for their First Communion next Sunday, June 12. Garden Update
More work days are planned for Saturdays, June 4, July 2, August 6, September 3 and October 1. This year, we’ll be setting up a “farm market” one Sunday per month, May – August, to sell extra produce at church. For details, and to sign up to help out with the garden, visit www.flcva.org/garden.

Vacation Bible School – July 11 – 15
The VBS Staff is busy getting ready to catch the wave of God’s amazing love. Please help us “build” our surf shack! If you have any of the following items to donate or loan, we will happily accept:
• Tiki torches
• Hawaiian / beachy décor
• Surf or boogie boards
• Aquatic stuffed animals (fish, crabs, dolphins, etc)

We are still looking for at least one more adult who can be available to teach all of the days. If you’re able, please contact Mary Q.
